Your question: Friends Advice

Dear Mookychick,

I have a job that I love but I would also like to design and sell tshirts to let me be a bit more creative. How do I do that without any having connections what so ever?

The Mookychick answer to your problem

relationship advice The cheap answer would be to put your designs up on CafePress, but that's getting ahead of yourself.

First, draw up a bunch of designs.

Then find a good local place that prints designs on shirts and paw at their threads (if you can't find local, find a national one and ask for samples - American Apparel makes good stuff, generally, but that might be limited to, uh, America) until you find a good bit of cotton you would be proud to put your designs on.

Then, make a limited run of them. Hawk them to friends, loved ones, favorite baristas, hip people, cute grannies, etc. Wear them yourself.

Then, when others ask "WHERE'D YOU GET THAT GROOVY SHIRT?" you can turn them on to part TWO of your glorious venture, which is a web site. Get some business cards and spend some dough on a good web site (good = smooth, cool, but NO FLASH INTRO!) where you've got displays of all your designs. Make sure to watermark them unobtrusively so people can't gank the designs and print off their own copies.

Oh yeah, and send some Mookychick's way!

relationship advice Well when I first had the idea that I wanted the world to eventually hear my neurotic ramblings, I joined as many websites and clubs, forums and magazines which could perhaps specialise in getting my talents seen. I also bought out waterstones of any literary how to, did this, do that kinda book.

It's tough to begin with nothing, but if you have the determination you can find a way.

For me, it was this website which led to me presenting a pilot show for BBC3. I didn't get the job, but I made it to the last two and that was thanks to Mookychick - for which I do for the love not the money (aye girls!!).

You pimp yourself out to anyone and anything who haa even the smallest connection! That's what I did, and it's working for me!

Myspace and places like these are fabulous inventions for getting yourself heard. Get one of these profiles and market it as a business!

The best thing to do is to keep trying, persevere, and have patience.

Good luck!

ps. where can I get one? xx
