This is the most excellent book I have read in several years! I gush not!It is essentially a gay love story between two men, set in England during the English Civil War. Jacob, a violent and jealous man, becomes besotted with fellow Parliamentarian soldier Christopher Ferris but their passionate friendship deteriorates, full of twists and unexpected turns. I won't spoil it by saying more.
Maria spins an excellent yarn, pulling the reader totally into the personal stories of the main characters, Ferris and Jacob. I must admit that, as I closed the book, I was freaked out and emotionally drained, having walked their turbulent lives with them to the devastating conclusion. In fact, I read it from cover to cover twice because I needed to absorb the characters, beautifully written with a real grasp of the human psyche and all its faults, jealousy, envy, betrayal, passion.
As a historical fiction writer myself, I could really appreciate the author's skill in painting the characters in believable full colour, something many books lack with their sometimes unreal and flat people and plots.This book has suspense, passionate homoeroticism, surprises and all set within a well-researched historical context. A grand read, thoroughly recommended.
