This felt cupcake makes an extra sweet key ring. It could also be used as a zipper pull on a coat, purse, or backpack. It’s super simple to make and doesn’t require costly supplies. You may already have the supplies in your sewing box. Finished size is approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) high by 1.75 inches (4.45 cm) across.

Here’s what you need:

  • felt scraps – I used ivory, pink and red but you can use any colors at all.
  • embroidery floss – I used ecru and red. You can use sewing thread that you have on hand instead.
  • scissors, needle, paper
  • key ring
  • ribbon – about 4 inches long
  • batting – polyester fiberfill

Step 1. Draw the icing and cupcake base on paper and cut them out. Trace the shapes onto the felt and cut those out. You’ll need two of each shape. Cut small circles for the cherries. I actually used a hole punch.

Step 2. Sew the icing pieces onto the bases with one or two strands of ecru floss. Make sure that the two complete cupcakes are mirror images. When you put them back to back, they need to line up.

I used a buttonhole stitch but you can use a straight stitch if you prefer. Stitch a cherry to each cupcake with the red floss. If you’d like to decorate your cupcake further, now would be the time to do it. You could add beads or straight stitches to represent sprinkles.

Step 3. Place the two cupcakes back to back, trim if necessary to get them exactly the same shape, and start to stitch them together around the edges with ecru floss. Again, I used the buttonhole stitch, but you can sew around it in any way you’d like. Be sure to fold the ribbon in half and tuck it into the top. Stitch right through the ribbon, catching it in a few stitches. Stop stitching when you’re about 2/3 the way around. Lightly stuff with fiberfill. Finish sewing around the cupcake. Attach the key ring and you’re done!

You could turn this little cupcake into so many things – Don’t add the ribbon. Instead sew on a pin and make it a brooch. Attach the cupcake to a ponytail holder, headband or barrette. Glue a magnet to the back. I’m sure you can come up with even more ideas!

Take this idea further and create your own felt designs. How about a strawberry or a panda face? I used the same basic steps to make a bunny rabbit and sock monkey. The sky’s the limit. Have fun!
