Fundraising ideas for breast cancer awareness

by Sally

Sally (whose mother is a breast cancer survivor) presents all mooks with fresh fundraising ideas for breast cancer awareness. We mooks particularly love poetry slams and 'buy a butler'.

No-one wants to put on the same fundraiser over and over again. It gets dull, boring, played out, and ultimately ineffective. However, with brand new ideas on how to earn some money for the right cause, fundraisers may find themselves having as much fun as those who donate! Breast cancer awareness advocates who are searching for new, fun twists on old ideas can read up on these five tips for fundraising ideas.

1. Bake Off

A bake sale is probably one of the oldest fundraisers in the book. Who doesn't love cookies, cupcakes, and brownies for a good cause? But by throwing in a little bit of competitiveness, a bake sale can be transformed into the much more exciting bake off. Event planners can charge by admission or by tasting, and can utilize either a voting or judging system to decide who has the best cake, the best pie, the best brownies, or the most creative dessert of the day. With the addition of games, eating contests and dessert oriented fashion walks, a bake off can easily become a family fun, all day event.

2. Board Game Tournament

We have all heard of chess tournaments and Chinese checkers competitions are not unheard of either. Poker and black jack hold tournaments often as well. But what about the simple Uno tournament? What about the Monopoly Games and the Chutes and Ladders Contest? Hosting a board game tournament is a fun way to get parents, kids, and teenagers involved. Hosting a number of mini tournaments for each type of game makes the party appealing to everyone, no matter which game they think they are pros at.

3. Buy a Butler

Great for high school, office, and church fundraisers for breast cancer awareness, auctioning of butlers is a fun and silly way to make money for the cause. Start by having high school seniors, church leaders, or employers volunteer to auction themselves off as butlers for a set period of time. Then gather everyone around and start the bidding. Watch as giggles and smiles erupt at the idea of leaders stepping down to be butlers. And the best part is, it's all for a great cause.

4. Car and Boat Detailing

The car wash is probably one of the more ancient fundraising ideas. But with a bit of a twist and some more hard work, you can combine a car wash with detailing services. Scrubbing, waxing, and shining cars means that you can charge more pay for more work, and drivers are more likely to stop by for a hugely discounted detailing than for a simple car wash.

5. Poetry Slam

Finally, a poetry slam is a great idea for getting people together for breast cancer awareness. By either charging tickets at the door, by selling snacks and coffee, or by putting the collection of poetry on sale after the show, a poetry slam can bring in the big bucks. Also, it allows survivors, patients, and loved ones the chance to get out there and share their experiences with breast cancer through the written word.
