Gay marriage in the US - if gay marriage is not legal can God really exist?

Torrey Meeks talks of gay marriage and comes to the conclusion that god does not exist, man is just a stupid animal, and the military is thirty years behind everybody else.

by Torrey Meeks

There is nothing wrong with being homosexual, and in these United States, that statement makes me part of a profound minority.

So when my wife asked me the other night if I thought openly homosexual individuals should be allowed in the military--I served in the US Army for a couple years-I had to say no after some careful deliberation.

I realize that sentiment might appear to put me at odds with my opening statement, so let me explain.

As it stands right now, openly homosexual individuals wouldn't be safe in the armed services. Bottom line.

It's not that I think homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to serve at all. I knew more than one person while I was in who, without ever having to say much, was clearly of a different sexual orientation. I had no problem with that; a couple were my friends. But I also knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that being open would have put them in grave danger from all manner of close-minded, and yes, uneducated, bigots totting high-powered weapons that fill the ranks of the military.

The reason is simple. You can count on any kind of military organization to be roughly 30 years behind the civilian world in matters of social policy. In America, the social policy in the civilian world says that it's still not okay to be openly homosexual.

This travesty of inequality can be directly traced back to America's painfully tenacious adherence to illogical religious dogma. Say it with me now, Christianity. And ostracizing homosexuals is by no means the sole domain of Christians. Religions of every stripe-from Islam to Judaism-look on homosexuality as a sin, which is why we should ban religion as Elton John said, but that's fodder for another column.

Because these religions see Man as a semi-deity created in the everlasting image of some pie in the sky god, homosexuality is viewed as a disgusting aberration encouraged by the devil and a sign of the most absolute form of moral decay.

To show you how this principle works, let's look at skin color. If there was a popular holy book that stated being black was a sin, or being Hispanic or white was a sin, anyone of the designated skin color would be the social equivalent of a leper. Because god said so.

However, as modern science has shown, skin color depends entirely on genetics, so we know generally know better. Not that it helps when it comes to homosexuality, which as a growing body of scientific evidence shows is mostly genetic as well.

Since I've established that religion is far and away the biggest culprit in a society's asinine persecution of anyone who doesn't conform to the social norms laid down in some "infallible" holy book, I'd like to say this right now: god does not exist, and Man is just a stupid animal.

Since god does not exist and Man is just a stupid animal we can conclude many things. One, homosexuality won't send you to hell. Two, since we're just animals and a casual glance at the greater animal kingdom shows us that homosexuality is quite normal, it can't possibly cause moral decay, can it?

After all, why do I care if you're attracted to someone of the same sex? I don't. It doesn't scare me, threaten me, infringe on my rights, trample my freedom, or do any other things that restrict my ability to make personal decisions, unlike, say, President Bush's Patriot Act.

Still, given all this, Americans time and again overwhelmingly vote to deny homosexuals the right to marry. God, he just doesn't approve.

To give you an idea as to how backwards we really are, South Africa recently unanimously voted to legalize homosexual marriage. Yes, we have been soundly beat by South Africa.

This puts us squarely in "backwater" territory when it comes to being socially progressive, and makes a travesty of our lip service to the idea of equality on which this country was founded.

To find proof backing up my claim that the American public is a writhing mass of ignorant god fearing cretins, I don't have to look very far.

On the way home to write this column, a bumper sticker riding next to one of those Christian fish plaques jumped out and mugged me. It depicted a clearly male stick figure holding hands with a clearly female stick figure. Underneath the two it proclaimed, "Marriage = One man + One woman."
