Moisturize spots away with baby bottom butter
by Jodynne Bell
There are acne-flavoured product brands out there that promise visibly clearer skin in 3 days, and the prevention of spots. They don't always work. People are often told they need to moisturise to help acne go away, but creams often make skin greasy and actually seem to develop spots. Until...
Just when I was about to give up, something rather strange happened, involving the Baby section in the supermarket I work at.
I know what you're thinking. The Baby section - nappies, powdered milk and mashed up Banana. Not particularly enticing to anyone over that stage of their life. Or so I thought.
"Where are the eggs?" asked some curious customers (the eggs were where they've always been, in the bakery aisle next to the sugar...), "Excuse me, could you point me in the direction of Houmous?" (certainly, three aisles down next to the sliced ham), "I'm sorry to bother you, but do you have any Baby Bottom Butter? We've heard it's brilliant as a facial moisturiser" - sorry, what?
According to the Daily Mail (which the lady fetched from the newspaper stand to show us the article), women had been using it as a face cream, rather than what it was intended for (protection against nappy rash). Of course, we had none in stock, and so sent the couple on their way.
A few weekends later, myself and a colleague found a case of six pots on the day's delivery and discovered that one of the pots was split open.
We took the broken pot to the small office on the shop floor, where a small amount of fooling around took place, leaving us with Baby Bottom Butter on our cheeks - which was hastily rubbed in. According to the other colleagues we found in the office, it was selling on eBay for around £15 (which we later checked and was found to be true).
I must admit I was sceptical about it, until I felt my cheek at the end of my shift. And it was soft. I mean, this was almost unrealistically soft. I couldn't believe it.
When I got home, I let my mum feel the smooth patch, and she was also impressed - of course, it was my dad's job to get up and into town for opening the next morning to snatch up the last few pots.
So what did I find to be the benefits?
- Smooth skin. Even more so than usual, and I'm only seventeen.
- That glowing look. You know how people like Kate Hudson always look like they're glowing in magazines and photographs, that radiant looking skin? That.
- The Vanilla fragrance. Makes you feel like you're eating a tub of that creamy Cornish ice cream, without the risk of gaining any weight. Of course, eating it is probably still better (the ice cream, not the baby bottom butter).
From the 'face product' perspective, however, it does take a little while for skin to absorb. Personally, I put it on about half an hour before I go to bed, which gives the majority a chance to soak in and work its magic whilst I - this time, literally - get my beauty sleep.
This product is sold by Waitrose only, being a product of the supermarket brand itself. £2.49 for 125ml.
Contains nothing fancy - olive oil, hydrogenated olive oil, vanillin and chamomile oil.
