How to make a customised detachable collar

by Chelsea PrimThing

Detachable collars are a super-easy way to transform an outfit. They work particularly wellwith a plain black or grey t-shirt, but can be worn over strapless dresses or worked into any style with custom embellishment.

Materials needed for a detachable collar

  • Fabric, Ribbon, Thread, Your chosen decoration.

How to make a detachable collar

First you will need to find your fabric - preferably a sturdy cotton, or something that will keep its shape well.

From this, cut out 2 basic collar shapes - these can be measured from one of your shirts and adapted to the your own design (round, pointed, scalloped).

When you have the 2 pieces, pin/tack them together with the reverse side showing. Use a sewing machine or hand stitch around the edge to join the two pieces. Remember to leave a gap where ribbon will be attached. This hole is also used to turn it the right way around.

Turn the whole thing inside out, giving a neat edge to the piece. Place the ribbon in the gaps and stitch them up, holding it in place.

Now the fun part... Deciding how to decorate it! Beads, buttons, studs and even fabric paint can be used, leaving it simple or completely covering it for those more adventurous. The basic collar is fairly quick and easy to make so you can easily make a few and get creative with different embellishments.
