ICON OF THE WEEK: Bjork
Open letter to Bjork
Dear Bjork,You believe in a fairytale world where magic can really happen. You wear dresses shaped like swans. You've had a passion for music since an early age, and you've never let men or society stifle your dreams. It probably pains you that you are as famous for your quirks and your tempestuous private life as you are for your music. This is really unfair. You're actually a very deep, intelligent, strong-minded and philosophical lady! Most people don't have the strength to try work out themselves and how the world works every minute of every day. You do that, though. You're always considering what it is to be a human, to be an animal, to be in love, to be special or ordinary... even what it is to be a grapefruit. Of course we mookychicks love your wild clothes and cheeky smile and fairy humour. But what we love most is that these wonderful things are an extention of your personality, which is big and giving. We think you would be the whole wide world if you could. Fear not, little seal-princess. Your eccentricities are special but you are even more so. Your wonderful voice and strange dreams make this world a better place. So thank you for the music, tiny little kukl*-lady! OH. And we want everyone to know you have done the soundtrack to a wonderfully strange film called Drawing Restraint 9. *kukl = 'witch' in icelandic love, Mookychick xxx Best Known For: Her acceptance speech for the 1998 Brit Awards was "I... am... grate... ful... grape... fruit." This doesn't make any sense but you can't really argue with it. Least Known For: Bjork and her hairdresser like to do cartwheels down the street in her home town in Iceland. Mooky Factor: Bjork is one of the world's most eccentric women. She has a cult following that recognises her unique talent. Her songs are a reflection of her character: crazy, addictive, exuberant, powerful and funny. Her voice sounds like it was made in a crystal cave. There's no-one quite like her. Best Bjork Quotes: Ive always been happy, silly, sad, boring, furious, ecstatic, in love, the whole scale, all at the same time, it doesn't make me unhappy, if you see what I mean. I find it very difficult to draw a line between what's sex and what isn't. It can be very, very sexy to drive a car, and completely unsexy to flirt with someone at a bar. I shaved my eyebrows, I was very pregnant and I exposed my belly on a TV show, performing in my band KUKL, a jazz punk thing. One woman had a heart attack while she was watching and sued me. Fortunately, she lost! It seems that most the world is driven by the eye, right? They design cities to look great but they always sound horrible! They design telephones to look great, but they sound horrible! I think it's about time that the other senses were celebrated. What probably confuses people is they know a lot about me, but it quite pleases me that there's more they don't know. I was born to be in love. I think it's more important for me to love than to actually be loved. It's such a head thing. It has to be with someone who can turn you on with your imagination and the body usually follows. When you're a teenager you meet someone and you always have a laugh together and want to marry him and always be with him. Then you meet another person and youve got great sex together so you just want to marry him and love him and be with him forever, but to get all thoses things in one person, you have to know yourself really, really well. I'm learning. It isn't calculated. That's one thing love isn't. I want to meet someone. Who doesn't? I've been reading about reincarnation, and the buddhists say we come back as animals. And buddhists refer to them as lesser beings but they're just like us. So I say fuck the buddhists! Links: www.bjork.fr (french) |
Bjork's BackgroundBjork is a nutsy future-pop new age punk princess with an incredible voice that got her an album deal (of Icelandic folk music, which is pretty extreme!) at the age of 11. She then sang in anarchic punk bands at age 13 (like Kukl, which in Icelandic means 'witch'. She became famous in Iceland for her punk bands. Singing in The Sugarcubes made her famous internationally. Then she started hanging out with dance music producers and making the strangely addictive new age dance music ("Human Behaviour" and "Big Time Sensuality") that propelled her to goddesshood and made her not just Bjork Gudmundsdottir (the name she was born with) but Bjork, I'm Famous Now So You Can Drop The Last Name. Bjork is a Scorpio (intense with hidden depths, an agent of change) and it shows. Her music and her dreams are her life. She won't be reigned in by genre - she creates her own, and goes wherever the music takes her. BJORK'S LOVES Bjork tends to fall in love with musicians and the people she works with. Her music is her passion so if a man is to inspire similar passion in her he must also be involved with music in some way. Bjork's love affairs have added stormy waves to her life's sea. She has always protected her son Sindri (which means 'Sparkling') from the limelight, and in 1996 Bjork jumped at a female reporter who was trying to photograph Sindri in a Thai airport, caught her by the hair and flung her down on a concrete floor. Bjork had been exhausted by a live tour and in a terribly bad mood. She later apologized with a public written statement, and apologised individually to the reporter by phone. It doesn't stop there. When Bjork and Goldie were in love, her ex Tricky suddenly attacked Goldie at Goldie's concert in 1996 - clearly a bad year. Bjork hit Tricky, and this made Goldie mad at Bjork. The course of true love never runs smooth. Bjork was also nearly killed by a stalker who sent her a bomb then killed himself while listening to Bjork's music because he was jealous of her boyfriend. Fortunately, a neighbour sensed a strange smell coming from the stalker's flat and notified the police, who discovered the plot before Bjork and her son Sindri received the bomb. No-one wants this kind of stress in their life. Perhaps due to the trauma, Bjork and her husband Goldie separated shortly afterwards. BJORK BECOMES QUEEN OF THE WORLD In Europe, everyone knows her. In the United States, less people know her but their numbers are growing. In a small island in the Indian Ocean called Mauritius, they've never heard of her and Bjork means 'boat'. Then again, who wants to be famous everywhere? Having such a strong cult following and an open spirit, Bjork takes extra measures to protect her privacy when she needs it. So that she could run around and think about singing songs to seals and chasing deer, Bjork bought a small, barren island off the western coast of Scotland. It had no electricity or telephones. It was a base where she could cleanse her soul and start a Kingdom of Bjork in peace. Things improved further for Bjork in 1997, when the title of 'lady' was conferred on her by the President of Iceland for her services to her country. Congratulations, Lady Bjork! |
