Being Christian and alternative
by Jade Genesis
Alternative Christian: Faith and a conformist system can be two separate things. An alternative Christian can experiment with style and non-conformist interests and still be dedicated to their faith. Yes/no?
Being a girl of alternative style has its ups and downs, just the same as anything else in the world. But being a Christian woman has its great challenges, especially when you come from a family that isn't into what you like.
I discovered alternative fashion in middle school but didn't really try anything until high school because I didn't have the means to. I started trying different things when I made friends with a girl who was totally outrageous in her colour scheme. It was hard experimenting with alternative style because no-one at my Church had the kind of guts to try new things. Everything was so uniform and had its own way of working; there wasn't much room for change in the existing system.
Being a Christian is hard enough, but when you want to try new things you are always met with opposition and people wonder what's up with you which means you end up repeating yourself, justifying choices in your style and outlook that others might be fortunate enough to take for granted. A lot of people I meet are non-Christians and I don't judge them for their beliefs, but I wish people wouldn't lump me in with them just because I look the part.
My main goal is to say: DON'T JUDGE. Especially if you don't know the person, you won't have the right to say things that could be hurtful to them. It's never cool to hurt people no matter how right you think you are. I also want to let other Mooks out there know that there are Christians that can be related to out there! I'm one of them. I enjoy anime and manga, Japanese food, meeting new people, gaming, and messing around in my closet and makeup. I also live a full life complete with family and a Boyfriend to boot!
This isn't a message of conversion. I'm just trying to bring up an important point that Christians are not all the boring stuck up religious snobs that we are portrayed as. The human relationship with faith will probably last forever, but a system always has the ability to change and grown. A lot of Christians I know actually have fun with their lives and come from amazing backgrounds. Some, like myself, have fun experimenting with clothes and discovering new things.
Please - if you meet an alternative Christian, don't cast them from your mind as a fully functioning human being, and don't be afraid. I've had to learn not to be.

Mookychick believes that climbing trees and riding giant turtles is more fun and girly than worrying about make-up. But if you want to worry about make-up instead of turtles? Fine by us.
