Your question: I have a skin problem

Dear Mookychick,

I am very unhappy with the fact that I have a skin problem and probably might be a disease. It makes me sad to see girls in skirts and shorts because I kind long to wear shorts on the hot summer days. But since I can't, I pretty much turned into kinda 'emo' or 'punk' and I don't fit with my friends anymore.

My group of friends used to be my latinos but since I couldn't be like them, they started to alienate me and I only say hi to them... Sometimes they talk to me but it's not the same anymore. I've told only my closer friends that it's possible that my skin problem might be PRURIGO NODULARIS, it hurts a lot that I can't be a lot like them because I started to be more shy and diffrent than I used to be. I used to be confident and happy but now they label me as a druggie and emo skater because of what I am; I don't do any drugs and I can't skate at all.

I really don't know how to fit in with anyone at school. I barely have anyone to be with, I am so alone I even thought of killing myself by falling off the school's building but it stops me that I have to think of my lovely grandma. I don't have my family here anymore, they all are in another country. I am a very unhappy person. I need help!! Please.

You must see a doctor. While stress can cause skin conditions, neither we - nor you - are qualified to make such diagnoses or practice medicine. You'll be surprised how much the immediate clearing up of a dermatitis after three days of medication, after you've suffered with it for months, can do for how you see your friends and your future. You may be straight edge, but there are plenty of good drugs out there.

There are plenty of friends to be found online. Join a forum for something you enjoy. Make some calls to your family. Spend some evenings with your grandma. Ask her how things were when she was your age. She's got lots of accumulated knowledge you'll never even know you missed out on if you don't.

And don't worry about not skating. You don't want a shattered kneecap anyway.

Hi hon, you've changed your look, your lifestyle and your friends rather than go to a doctor and check exactly what it is you have and what kind of treatments are on offer. A doctor's opinion and treatment suggestions is the first step. I'm sorry to hear your family live elsewhere, that might make things like doctors appointments tougher to arrange, but I know you can do it. Your grandma can help if you're living with her, as can a school nurse or health worker.

Once you know exactly what skin condition you have, and what the treatment is, do things that make you feel less alone and isolated. That means talking to people, your friends and family and whoever else. Sometimes people will find it easier to understand you have a skin condition which has affected your self-confidence if you tell them. If you keep it to yourself, change your look and saying hanging around with them, they may not realise it's due to your body image and may think you're snubbing them for the drug-filled skater lifestyle - because they won't know any better?
