Isa and the Filthy Tongues

It's weak sauce to just namecheck people that a band's sound reminds you of, but when those people are Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Sleater Kinney, The Killers and the Pixies, you know you're onto a good thing with dark indie outfit Isa and the Filthy Tongues...

Isa and Martin Metcalfe head Isa and the Filthy Tongues, a dark little band with a dark little underground sound. Their musical barbs are bitter-edged and poison-tinged, with the haunting guitars of some Tarantino soundtrack and the moody, low, sparse echoes of The Killers.

The Filthy Tongues were born from the twisted roots of two dark indie bands - Goodbye Mr McKenzie and Angelfish (the frontwoman of Angelfish was the lovely Shirely Manson, who moved on to growl her heart out with Butch Vig in Garbage).

The third member, Stacey Chavis from Portland, Oregon assumes the role of Isa and her voice is verily the voice of Broken America, a bottle thrown out of a car howling down route 66 on a lonely wolf-howl of a night. Think gothic country twang with Lydia Lunch-esque debauchery.

Here's what the music press are saying about Isa and the Filthy Tongues:

"a shimmering delight, redolent of the Deep South and dark places, reminiscent, at times, of Depeche Mode or Echo and the Bunnymen"

"a blistering slab of dark, indie rock"

"Tarantino-esque"

Latest news from Isa and the Filthy Tongues:

Their new single 'New Town Killers', out on Apr 06 2009, is the lead track on 'New Town Killers', an upcoming British Indie flick about two private bankers who get their kicks from hunting down homeless folks and people from the margins of society. Nice. Mookychick is looking forward to that...
