Pigtails and Army Boots: female-fronted internet radio
by Hayley Foster
More and more women are taking control of their music by self-producing or self-promoting. It's not just a feminist stance, it's grass-roots. DJ Moonlight talks about her net radio show, Pigtails and Army Boots featuring female artists only!
If you haven't already heard about it, Pigtails and Army Boots is an internet radio show presented by moi (DJ Moonlight) and is all about female/female-fronted music from many genres, including but not limited to: rock, indie, punk, metal, alternative and 80's pop.
The show currently goes out on two stations: Radiogetswild ( www.radiogetswild.com) and Generation Mix (www.generationmix.co.uk) It hits the airwaves on Sunday mornings (9-11am on Generation Mix - and then another version goes out in the evening 6-8pm on Radio Gets Wild).
I am planning to give you a rundown of my play list as often as I can, and while I'm at give you some recommendations and interesting news!

There are two unsigned artists you should check out on this list - Lallakiss ( www.myspace.com/Lallakiss) are from Manchester and looking for people to collaborate with. Working Class Heroes ( www.myspace.com/workingclassheroes) are from Cardiff and are a great rock band. They need promotion in places they can't play including here in the UK, so go add them and make them known!
I started a new feature this week; I included a run down of women in the UK charts (although I'm only mentioning the decent ones... Pigtails and Army Boots is a Britney free zone). We had quite a few in the album charts this week: Kate Nash, PJ Harvey, KT Tunstall, Joni Mitchell and Natalie Imbruglia. I've heard all of them, apart from Joni Mitchell and Natalie Imbruglia. The ones I have heard are brilliant, especially Kate Nash. Mind you, I would expect Natalie Imbruglia's to be good as it's a greatest hits.
Another feature I have on my show is album of the month - this week was the second week for Deborah Harry's album "Necessary Evil".
I hope I have given you some ideas for new things to listen to... until next time!
