RRRRAAAOWWRRR! It's The Mighty Roars!
If you like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you'll love the Mighty Roars. They're nasty-blonde and twice as dirty, like a whip-cracking Karen O chained to a PVC-clad Debbie Harry mouthing obscenities in 'Videodrome'.
So who are The Mighty Roars? Well, they're pretty new. They met in Berlin in early 2004, united by a desire to surf the London new wave. Singer Lara hails from Sweden, whilst Martin Pilkington (guitar) and David (drums, bass) are good old-fashioned London boys.
The Mighty Roars released their debut album 'Swine and Cockerel' on 16 April 2007 on One Little Indian records (one of our fave labels). Actually, the way the mooky eds discovered them was that an ex-flatmate used to write for a music mag and they still get all his review copies piling through the door. One day they opened all the review copies they'd been saving to give to him (it felt like Christmas) and when they stuck The Mighty Roars on the CD player it was like the doors to heaven opened and a pile of rubbish, used needles, glitter and old lipsticks fell out. Simply gloriously messy, darlings! Pure grr-fuzzbox! A mookychick couldn't ask for more.
Sometimes sleep-deprivation means we can be a little lost for words here at Mooky Towers, but MusicOMH.com says of the album: The Mighty Roars are so frenzied that cliché rarely catches up. Posturing, posing and manicuration all goes out of the window in the name of a visceral spirit that grips you by the head and feeds you rhythm via a shovel. From the opening Sellotape to the closing Whipped My Bitch you're rarely allowed time to breath, and the most thrilling aspect of Swine and Cockerel is its glee in cutting trad sensibility to shreds.
Okay, the album highlights:
Sellotape opens with Lara's scratchy vocals rodeo-riding punky guitars. "It's about a leather-clad tattooed turbo-bitch with a six-minute attention span," she says. Huzzah! "But underneath her poor little heart is held together with sellotape."
In '06 the band was jolted into the studio by a suicidal Whale in the Thames. Using the beast as an inspiration they mashed together a most powerful song, complete with magpies in verse two. It's a song about a whale, and it's amazing. You can't go wrong!
Kiss It is a break-your-neck riot of thrash and scream: "I suppose it's about mortality and chance," says David. "People whining and whinging, they can all kiss it!"
We do hope you check out the growly bad sound of The Mighty Roars, and maybe consider buying their album. If we hadn't pilfered it off our lovely and tolerant ex-flatmate, we would have.
