The Last Day of Innocence DVD is a dark, energetic and celebrational gothic fashion video featuring a wild array of goths from all walks of life. It's a celebration that doesn't indulge in goth stereotypes and pays tribute to the vast number of gothic subcultures and how they express themselves through their fashion. Gothic, Wave Gothic, Cyber Goth, Gothic Lolita, Wave Punk, Victoriandustrial, Industrial Gothic, Fetish fashion and cool goth guys with metal legs - you'll find them all here, parading like beautiful peacocks in their natural environment.
The goths featured in 'The Last Day of Innocence' been captured on film at Leipzig's annual Wave Gotik Treffen festival, drawn there in their tens of thousands to form an anarchic gothic kingdom where they can show off their vivid gothic clothing, hairstyles and non-mainstream attitudes in peace.
If only there could have been an extra segment of documentary, with some of the beautiful and wild goths featured talking about their fashion and their life in their own words! As it is, this underground video (which has excellent production values) is a welcome slice of GMTV - Gothic Music Television.
Gothic fashion unleashed
Girls lounge sensually against each other and share fans and parasols, sporting blue lips, ripped fishnets, shaved and painted eyebrows, mermaid hairfalls and PVC boots so high you could reach the stars in them. Gothic men strut their stuff with top hats, mohawks, wrought chinese finger talons and full-body tattoos. It's a riot of creativity and craziness as the goths roam freely among their own.
These astounding visuals are accompanied by a pumping soundtrack featuring music by Circus of Dead Squirrels, All Gone Dead, Lesbian Bed Death, Richard Christ, Love Sex n Death, Wild Machine, Aural Vampire and Sexo y Droga - perfect to get you in the mood for anarchic possibility!
Gothic culture, innocence and experience
The title of this feature is very 'fin de siecle'. It evokes a sumptuous decadence which certainly matches the gothic fashion on show... but perhaps you know of 'Songs of Innocence and Experience', a collection of poetry by the visionary William Blake? Nothing is truly innocent because it contains the seeds of its own destruction. Similarly, nothing can be truly experienced, because it was born of the joy of innocence. Just as Lolita fashion represents tainted innocence, the gothic clothing and lifestyle is a beacon for Blake's meaning of the word 'experience'. Why?
For some, gothic clothing and fashion is an aesthetic they feel drawn towards. For others, the gothic lifestyle is a means to channel the primal and socially taboo energies of sex, death and violence. There are segments where 'The Last Day of Innocence' features goth girls writhing around on beds, or knives playing gently with pale bare skin and black lacy underthings. This gothic exploration of sex and death is nothing too racy - a flash of pierced or gaffa-taped nipple here, a girl-girl kiss there, and a scarified arm over there. While this more overt behaviour may not be to the taste of all goths, it's a lifestyle choice that nevertheless runs through some genres of gothic subculture and is about being able to express yourself freely as an individual. And, importantly, the gothic proclivity to death and sexuality retains an innocence. Kisses and bondage aren't going to hurt anyone who doesn't want to be hurt. There's an innocent playfulness in the posing and writhing of the goths with their knives, knickers and scars - they are simply channelling energies, expressing themselves and playing with darkness in a safe environment. It's all rather nice when you think about it.
At a running time of around 40 mins, The Last Day of Innocence is a visual treat and the perfect gift for your lovely gothic girlfriend or boyfriend. With a driving soundtrack and amazing non-stop footage of gothic fashion, it's the perfect party accompaniment to a moonlit night of absinthe and merry-making with similarly inclined friends.
