Game of Thrones Card Game
So we test drove the Game of Thrones card game, mainly because the Game of Thrones is the only game there is…
“The wolf and the lion will be at each other’s throats. We will be at war soon, my friend.” – Lord Varys
Having checked out the Lord of the Rings card game from Fantasy Flight Games, we thought we’d peruse another on their list… and the premise of Game of Thrones is very much as you’d expect.
A card game for two players, Game of Thrones is based on the epic HBO series. Players war against each other on the Westeros plains and with a mix of strategy, intrigue and sheer bloodines they aim to crush their opponents at court in Kings Landing and gain the Iron Throne for themselves.
You can shift the balance of power with game-changing plot cards, then marshall your forces and engage your opponent in a series of challenges to gain power for your House.
A pair of fifty-card decks allow players to experience their own battles and simmering intrigues as House Lannister or House Stark. Each deck includes many of the show’s most recognizable characters and locations, including Eddard Stark, Cersei Lannister, Robert Baratheon, Littlefinger and Jon Snow.
We’ve played it quite a few times now – the first time was the trickiest, getting to grips with sophisticated timing structure and rules that are slightly ambiguous on occasion (but hey, that’s what DIY house rules are for). With each playing, the game got easier and more involved, and it was easy to forget that there were only two of you playing. Because you weren’t really you at all. You were House Stark and House Lannister.
There are booster packs available, but the core set of house cards and plot cards are more than enough to provide numerous hours of shifting strategy-based plots with completely different outcomes each time.
Loved the art, too. Bravo.
