What is a Super Blue Blood Moon?
A super blue blood moon is when a moon combines three states, each of them rare in themselves – a supermoon, a blue moon, and a blood moon.
The next super blue blood moon will occur on January 31st.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon takes place when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth – and this tends to happen once every 1-2 years.
When the Earth, moon and sun line up – and the moon is on the opposite side to the Earth from the sun, with its point of orbit closest to us – we witness a supermoon.
You can always tell a supermoon because it hangs so big and bright in the sky, as if it’s heralding the birth of a new aeon.
What is a blue moon?
Moonmooks will most likely know the answer to this one! A lunar month is around 19.5 days, whereas calendar months last between 28 and 31 days. Very occasionally, a ‘blue moon’ occurs which is the second sighting of a pure full moon within one calendar month.
What is a blood moon?
A blood moon has come to refer to a lunar eclipse when the moon is at the closest point in its orbit to the Earth.
It hangs blood-red and heavy and fat in the sky. You can still see the moon during the lunar eclipse, because it’s lit up by the sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere.
A blood moon is red because sunlight has been refracted and filtered. The green and violet shades of the spectrum have been scattered and diffused. It’s the red light that’s mainly left to reach the moon’s surface.
