Poetry by Linda M. Crate: this little damphyr

this little damphyr

the earth cold and damp
stung at first

i missed the light
of sunrises and sunsets,
but you didn’t care
wanted to smother me in your
darkness you broke me
on the fangs of your nightmares;

forgot that i knew
the song of immortality
being a monster’s daughter doesn’t always
have advantages but sometimes it does—

when battling other monsters
they underestimate me and so now
i will burn you in the fires of my rage
you said didn’t exist,

and you will find that this little damphyr
can win against anyone including you.
