WOW Women on Writing - Get paid to write

Women writers – have you heard of WOW yet? They’re a huge, friendly community of and resource for women writers, with quarterly writing competitions and – best of all – they pay their contributors!

The minute we at Mookychick laid our eyes on the WOW! Women on Writing eZine and writing hub, we really liked what we saw. They’ve been going since 2006, so the eZine is more of an established Grande Dame than a flighty Mademoiselle (if you’re wondering, Mookychick is more of a flight Grande Dame. Or an established Mademoiselle. From an aesthetic perspective, we simply can’t decide which sounds more adventurously regal). As WOW! put it themselves, the project is “designed to support women’s creativity, energy, blood, sweat and tears, throughout all stages of the writing process.” We liked the bit about energy and creativity. Also, have bashed out hundreds of thousands of poor squirming little words in our time, we also like – and empathised with – the bit about blood, sweat and tears.

Their mission, and it’s a genuinely novel one, is to bridge the gap between women’s magazines (more Red, Pepper and Marie Claire than Cosmo) and regular writing websites. They encourage authors to promote themselves on the eZine through articles. It’s very handy if you’re a an eBook author hoping to catch the eye of enough people to make it into print. Those authors’ articles are equally useful to any readers who truly love writing (from either a purely creative, up-and-coming or utterly professional perspective). If you want articles on cliches, suspending disbelief, writing for pet magazines, dealing with someone stealing your work or fighting writer’s block, you’ll find it all on WOW!.

Oh yes, the writing for money bit. That’s a very important bit, that is. Basically, WOW! is always looking for submissions from talented freelancers. Each issue focuses on Women, Writing and the monthly Theme, so do bear that in mind if you’re thinking of applying. They expect submissions of work that has not been previously published elsewhere. Here are their rates at time of writing:

Columns, Word Counts and Pay Rates on WOW!:

  • Twenty Questions: $50
  • How 2 (1,500 – 2,000 Words): $75
  • Inspiration (1,500 – 2,000 Words): $75
  • Feature Interviews (up to 3,000 Words): $75
  • Feature Articles (up to 3,000 Words): $150

If you’re getting to the point where you think you’re ready to write for money, get in touch with WOW! Women on Writing and give it your best shot.
