Beltane Sabbat Ritual Photoshoot With Blythe Dolls

Our thanks to Katrin who has created this Beltane Sabbat photoshoot especially for our annual May Day Magic ritual – using Blythe dolls!

Katrin loves working with Blythe Dolls. If you’ve not heard of them, they are collectible dolls which were originally briefly produced in the seventies. Since the turn of the millennium they’ve been made and distributed by a Japanese company. They can be fully customized by their owners, from their wigs and eye colours right down to their expressions. Some people buy each new edition as a collectible, but others customize them to look unique (and there’s some amazing/terrifying work out there).

As a one-off project, Katrin has created a gorgeous and inspiring Beltane Sabbat photoshoot, just for Mookychick.

The dolls’ May Day wildflower crowns were created with bluebells, celandine, daises and ivy leaves. Katrin told us the crowns were surprisingly hard to make, being so tiny, but these little wildflowers were perfect for the job!

Each doll wears a dress knitted by hand for the occasion. The colours of these cute little dresses (who said witches always wear black?) have been selected to celebrate the cusp of Spring and Summer. The Blythe dolls work their magic in style wearing sky blue, foliage green and Beltane fire colours – with floral wreaths to match.

As the Blythe Witches gather to work their light magic using the power of three, they have all the tools they need for the job. Their sacred goblets are the perfect size to drink from, and Katrin picked up that tiny cauldron at a Doreen Valiente exhibit held in Brighton in 2016.
