Cookie Monster Cupcakes Recipe
We saw this cupcake recipe floating around and tried it for ourselves. It totally works. Uncanny!
A cookie monster, see, has good times and bad times. He eats the cookie… but sometimes he doesn’t eat the cookie. Sometimes, a baking craze takes over and he gets eaten. That wasn’t part of his Sesame Street contract, but times change. Everyone is baking cookie monster cupcakes now, and said monsters huddle in corners whispering of the Human Apocalypse. We are so sorry – but you taste too good! And blue food is just so exciting!
This recipe is vegetarian but not vegan.
Ingredients to make 24 cupcakes:
- 200g butter
- 200g caster sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 eggs
- 500g plain flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 50ml milk
Cookie Monster Decorating ingredients
- 1 packet marzipan
- 1/2 packet icing sugar
- chocolate drops
- 1 packet desiccated coconut
- blue food colouring
- 1 packet mini chocolate chip cookies
How to make the cupcakes
If you don’t have time you can just buy ready-made cupcakes, but if you’d rather make them from scratch…
Preheat your oven for about 10 mins to Gas Mark 4 / 180 C. While it’s preheating, line a cupcake tin or two with paper cases, mix the cupcake ingredients into a smooth gooey batter and dollop them into the cupcake tins. Bake the cupcakes in the oven for 15-20 minutes, then take them out and let them cool. They will smell divine, but don’t eat them.
How to make marzipan eyes for your cookie monster
Mix the icing sugar and marzipan together to form a smooth paste, then roll it in your hands to form little round eyeballs. If you’ve got chocolate drops to hand they’ll make good pupils, or you can carefully apply a round dot of blue food colouring with a paint brush for blue pupils. It’s find if your eyes look a bit googly – this is a Sesame Street character, after all.
How to make the rest of your cookie monster
Add a drop or two of blue food colouring to the desiccated coconut to create the cookie monster’s blue fur. Less is more, so start off with just a drop to get a pastel blue colour. Then you can decide if you to go darker. Blue food colouring stains are hard to get out, so go with a glass bowl if you’ve got one.
Take another bowl and mix together the icing sugar with water and a drop of blue food colouring.
The fun bit. Dip your cupcakes headlong into the blue icing sugar mix (the icing sugar is acting like glue here), then dip them into the coconut mix to get the textured fur and allow to dry. Don’t rush it. Once the cupcakes are dry, glue your cookie monster eyes on where you want them with a little more of the icing sugar mix.
Finally, cut the cookies in half, make a little mouth slot in your cookie monster cupcake and slide in the monster’s cookie.
Sure, you’ll eat him, but cookie monster understands. That’s just how it goes in the Human Apocalypse. At least he’ll go the way he would have wanted… with a cookie in his mouth.
