Modern Witchcraft, Magic and Spirituality

Magical living is such a personal journey. There is dark magic, light magic, and everything in between. We will not judge you, or tell you how to walk your path. You can be a person of faith, or have none. You can believe in divine beings or prefer to work with archetypes. If it works for you, it works. Magical living is a means to explore everything that is visible and invisible. It is a means of exploration and self-empowerment. The path of a witch just beginning their journey is as valid as that of someone who has been practicing witchcraft and magic for years. We are here for you as you walk your own path.

About Modern Witchcraft and Spirituality

The examples of modern witchcraft practices and techniques you see above are a taste of the numerous articles Mookychick has to offer. Click the little number links below to go deeper and see what you find in our arcane vaults.

The modern witch spins a spider’s web. We cannot be pinned down. Our will is strong. We are not against monotheistic faiths here at Mookychick. Everyone has the right to cherish and explore their own beliefs. We are not against atheism, either. Many of us are atheists. We are for discovery, connection and the exploration of the spirit.

Are witches real?

Everyone has their own definition of witchcraft. One way of looking at it is that you believe you can use your will, symbolism and ritual in order to explore invisible energies in the universe and shape both your own consciousness and some aspects of the world around you.

Is witchcraft evil?

In the Salem witch trials and the Pendle witch trials, people accused of witchcraft were killed, and this terrible event wasn’t a one-off. History is filled with the blood of witches, of those who choose to practice witchcraft or seek to explore their own magical power and spiritual path. Are herbalists, midwives and artists evil? A lot of what these people do is closely aligned to the practice of witchcraft in modernity and history.

We’re not here to tell someone they shouldn’t work dark magic that adversely affects someone else. While the creators of Mookychick would never do that, we’re yet to walk a mile in everyone else’s shoes, and have no intention of making a judgemental blanket statement on the matter.

Light magic has no negative intent – it is there to raise the spirits, energies and circumstances of the witch or the intended recipients of a spell or ritual. There’s no harm.

In addition, let us not be too binary on the concept of light or dark magic. The darkness of a new moon or a shadow need not be associated with ill intent. We need the darkness as a backdrop with which to see the light. We need to explore the unknown. Sometimes, in magical activities such as shadow work, we need to explore, acknowledge and understand the darkness in ourselves in order for a process of self-healing to take place.

Do witches have to work in covens?

A witch can work on their own or as part of a coven if desired. We may walk separately, but as modern witches we are all here for each other. We can keep our journey to ourselves, or share our dreams, our rituals and our discoveries on the way.

Can you be a witch and a Christian, Muslim, Jew, believer or atheist?

From Mookychick community members who have shared their personal lived experiences, the answer is a positive one! Making spells and rituals doesn’t mean you can’t also have faith, and you don’t need to believe in any divinities to be a witch.

What is the difference between witchcraft and paganism?

A witch need have no particular faith to ply their craft. A pagan believes in an array of deities, and has faith. There is also a difference between Wicca and paganism, if you’re interested.

What is a modern witch?

To be a modern witch is to follow one’s own path. To balance faith with magical practice. If you’re a member of various pagan religions, you might explore pagan tools that feel right in your hand when you carry out rituals, spells and evocations that feel personal to you. If you have periods, work moonflow spells and rituals (at your own pace, naturally) with menstrual blood magic. To some, creating a sigil can be a powerful form of results magic. You may seek to find new ways to use Tarot cards. As a modern practioner of magic, you can use the healing self-awareness of ritual to the max, because maybe today is the day you seriously need a spiritual bath. Maybe you want to get witchy in the kitchen. Perhaps you celebrate the pagan festival of Samhain. Then again, you may prefer the floating intuition of a psychogeographical derive. Some of us are drawn to dark magic. Others of us are drawn to the light. A number of us are drawn to both.

And hey, sometimes being a pagan goth girl can be isolating. Especially if no-one else in your town wears black, let alone desires a conversation about the best way to work with a Cheeto poppet.

Our personal journeys are not straight lines, no circles repeating on themselves, but spirals. We all start somewhere. Maybe you’re weighing up how to make a Book of Shadows or quietly trying to figure out the difference between Wicca and Paganism.

Walk your own magical path.

It all condenses to one hugely important thing. The definition of a modern witch is what you say it is. And if you have witchy thoughts, rituals or activities to share, we’d love to hear from you.
